Emile Littré: the man after whom the street is named.

  • 28/02/2024
  • About the hotel

Émile Littré was a man of many talents and commitments, whose influence has left a lasting mark in the fields of language, philosophy, and politics in France. Throughout this article, you will discover his life and his commitments to France.A life rich in experiences and rewarding. It all begins with the birth of this man, Émile Littré, born in 1801 in the 6th arrondissement. The first years of his life unfold around Cognac, but Émile Littré quickly returns to Paris by 1811. He begins his studies at the Louis Le Grand High School, located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, where he forms a friendship with a certain Louis Hachette, who will become his future publisher. Approaching the end of his high school years, Émile Littré hesitates about his vocation. Around 1822, he eventually starts studying medicine and becomes a hospital intern. At the same time, he takes the opportunity to improve his linguistic skills and manages to master reading and writing in four modern languages by the age of 25, thus becoming an excellent Hellenist and Latinist. On the verge of completing his medical thesis in 1830 to obtain recognition as a physician, Émile Littré decides that he does not wish to pursue this professional path, although he never severed his ties with this profession throughout his life.Emile Littré was a man interested in everything… cites Jean Hamburger in his book “Monsieur Littré”. Eager for knowledge, Emile Littré agrees to translate the complete works of Hippocrates. Later, he also publishes texts on history and science, notably in numerous medical publications.Around 1835, he marries Pauline Lacoste, with whom he will have a daughter and will live in a peaceful union until the end of his days. Thanks to his various writings, he can finally settle in a Parisian apartment located on Rue de l’Ouest in the 14th arrondissement. Just steps away from the Luxembourg Gardens, which he is familiar with, this apartment is larger and more comfortable to accommodate his family.Émile Littré also had a notable political career. He was elected as a senator in 1871, representing moderate republicans. His political commitment was often in line with his philosophical convictions, notably his support for secularism and science as the foundation of society. At the age of 38, Emile Littré became a member of an institution playing a role in promoting research through the awarding of numerous prizes: the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres. During this time, his attraction to the French language was stronger than ever. It was at this moment that he considered creating a dictionary entirely dedicated to etymological questions. In 1841, he submitted his idea to his friend Hachette, who ran a publishing house. This dictionary aimed to enrich words by analyzing them and providing relevant quotations. Much of his life would be devoted to the realization of this work.A week after Émile Littré’s death, the great French journalist and writer Émile Zola went so far as to proclaim him “the man of the century”.A touch of Emile Littré at the Hotel Le Littré.Take a moment to stroll through the Verandabar. Despite the digital age, Hotel Le Littré provides its guests with several copies of the Littré dictionary. Take advantage of this opportunity to explore it and deepen your knowledge while enjoying a drink of your choice that our bartender will be delighted to serve you.

Rendez-vous with History: Gastronomy’s legendary addresses in the 6th Arrondissement

  • In Paris

The history of Parisian terraces and restaurantsThe history of Parisian restaurants is rich, fascinating, and dates back to the 18th century. The origin of the word “restaurant” is attributed to a Parisian entrepreneur who opened an establishment on Rue des Poulies and displayed a sign with the inscription “restaurant” to indicate that he served restorative broths believed to have healing virtues. During that time, inns often offered fixed meals, but this entrepreneur revolutionized the industry by providing à la carte dishes.Have you noticed the multitude of terraces in Paris? The popularization of terraces in Parisian restaurants is closely linked to the social and cultural evolution of the city. In the 19th century, Paris was booming, with the transformation of old neighborhoods into grand boulevards thanks to Baron Haussmann. It was during this period that cafes and restaurants multiplied, and terraces became popular places. This growth can be attributed to several factors: Firstly, Parisians, lovers of social life, appreciated the opportunity to sit outdoors, enjoy the weather, and observe the bustling street activity. Terraces offered a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, allowing customers to meet their friends in an outdoor setting. Additionally, terraces were a means for restaurateurs to maximize their space. In a city where space is often limited, terraces provided a clever solution to accommodate more guests.Today, Parisian terraces have become emblematic of Parisian culture, associated with the romantic idea of enjoying coffee or a meal outdoors while observing the world passing by. Some restaurants and cafes stand out with remarkably elegant décors. In this article, you will discover the fascinating stories of the greatest restaurants in Paris.Focus on the restaurants that have left their mark on Paris’s 6th arrondissementLe Procope, the oldest restaurant in ParisLocated in the heart of the Latin Quarter of Paris, Le Procope is considered the city’s oldest restaurant. Its history dates back to 1686 when Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, originally from Palermo, opened a café that would later become known as Le Procope. At the time, the place was frequented by intellectuals, writers, philosophers, and artists, making Le Procope an important cultural hub.In its early days, Le Procope was more of a literary café than a restaurant. Enlightened minds such as Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, and others gathered to discuss new ideas and intellectual movements of the time. The café also served as a meeting place for Enlightenment thinkers, and many revolutionary projects were discussed within its walls.Over the centuries, Le Procope evolved into a renowned restaurant, but it has preserved its historical atmosphere. The establishment witnessed many significant events in French history, including the Revolution of 1789, and survived through political and social changes, becoming an iconic place where history and gastronomy converge.Today, Le Procope continues to welcome visitors from around the world, offering a unique experience that blends the charm of the past with delicious contemporary French cuisine. Its walls are adorned with historical memorabilia, making Le Procope not only a restaurant but also a living museum of Parisian history.La Pérouse, the restaurant for explorers and sailorsThe restaurant La Pérouse, located on the banks of the Seine River in Paris, has a fascinating history that dates back to the 18th century. Founded in 1766, the establishment takes its name from the famous French explorer, Count de La Pérouse.Initially, La Pérouse was an inn frequented by sailors, explorers, and adventurers of the time. Its location on the banks of the Seine made it a privileged spot for those embarking on expeditions or returning from distant journeys. Legend even has it that Napoleon Bonaparte visited the inn before departing for his exile on the island of Elba.Over the years, La Pérouse became a popular meeting place for the Parisian high society. The restaurant underwent renovations in the 19th century and gained a notorious reputation for its romantic ambiance and sumptuous décor. The rooms are adorned with mirrors, precious woodwork, and elegant chandeliers. The restaurant has had moments of glory throughout its history, hosting famous personalities and artists such as Victor Hugo, George Sand, and Gustave Flaubert. It has also survived periods of political change, preserving its charm and unique character.Today, La Pérouse remains an iconic establishment on the Parisian gastronomic scene, celebrating its rich past while continuing to offer a unique culinary and cultural experience along the banks of the Seine. The more recent story of chef Hélène Darroz and her restaurant MarsanKnown in the world of French gastronomy and admired by the general public, it is impossible not to be familiar with Hélène Darroze, a highly acclaimed Michelin-starred chef, whom Littré had the pleasure of hosting for one of its later seminars.Coming from a family with roots in the culinary world, Hélène Darroze began her career in the culinary field and later won several awards, including 2 Michelin stars for her restaurants in Paris and London. Her extreme professionalism and ability to hit the mark are evident every time she opens a new establishment. The concept of her restaurant Marsan is to offer signature dishes that represent the spirit of the establishment and its location on Rue d’Assas in the 6th arrondissement. The atmosphere adds a lot to this understated and elegant address where only the finest ingredients are presented: for example, blue lobster gently poached in Espelette pepper butter, grilled wagyu by the fireplace with a whole confit tomato stuffed with tomatoes, or the essential dessert: the baba soaked in Armagnac.Le Pont Traversé, a café with a bookshop feelNear the Luxembourg Gardens and the Le Littré hotel, Le Pont Traversé, once a butcher shop and later a bookstore, takes its name from a collection of tales by Jean Paulhan. After the closure of the butcher shop, the bookstore was founded by the writer and poet Marcel Béalu in 1949. However, in 2019, the bookstore closed its doors. Frédérique Jules then took on the task of transforming the space while preserving the original storefront and murals, classified as a historical monument, to make way for an entirely new, sleek café and a delicatessen, still under the name Le Pont Traversé. The facade is striking, as it still features sculpted beef heads and enamel plaques, a nod to the former butcher shop. The café is warm and inviting, adorned with ornaments and cement tiles that shine. Le Pont Traversé is a place of life, sharing, and exchange where one can have lunch, dinner, or enjoy a coffee or a drink on the terrace. On the shelves of Le Pont Traversé, you can also find homemade jams and spreads, chocolate, tea, coffee, and olive oil – perfect for taking home a souvenir of the capital.Café de Flore, the café of the starsLe Café de Flore is one of the iconic cafes near the Le Littré hotel, located in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood. Founded in 1887, the cafe has been a meeting place for numerous intellectual, artistic, and literary figures over the decades. In the early 20th century, Café de Flore was frequented by writers such as Guillaume Apollinaire, André Gide, and Paul Eluard. In the 1930s, it became the haunt of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, who spent long hours there discussing philosophy and literature.During World War II, Café de Flore was a meeting place for the Resistance. After the war, it continued to attract intellectuals and artists, becoming a symbol of intellectual and bohemian Paris. Later on, the cafe also witnessed the beginnings of many celebrities, including Pablo Picasso.Today, Café de Flore retains its old-world charm and continues to attract visitors from around the world. It remains one of the most iconic cafes in Paris, associated with the cultural and literary history of the city. You can pay homage to the place by enjoying a croissant or a good espresso.

Hotel Le Littré welcomes Nobel Prize winner in literature

  • 10/10/2023
  • Events

A long life storyPlaywright, essayist, poet, novelist and political activist, Soyinka Wole is known as the first African author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, which he received in 1986. Having grown up in Aké (Bella Kota), he uses the experience of where it all began to write his autobiography. From an early age, he was imbued with all the world’s knowledge. He sees with his child’s eyes: a mixture of all his precious memories, all the people he has come into contact with, his culture and political ideas. He was fascinated by his father’s world, from which he drew the devotion of his commitment, particularly to Isara, his father’s village.  After studying literature in England, he began his career as a playwright, founding several theater companies, including the 1960 Masks Drama Troupe. He describes theater as a moving, exhilarating and spiritual experience. His plays include Le Lion et la Perle (1959), La Danse de la Forêt (1960) and Les Tribulations de Frère Jéro (1959). With more than one string to his bow, he mastered the full range of literary styles, drawing his creativity from outside the university context. His political dedication, an integral part of his life, is remarkable. Indeed, he supported the independence movement in Biafra, a state in south-eastern Nigeria, a commitment that led to two years’ imprisonment and exile. Between his imprisonment and exile, he taught at the university, where he left an indelible mark that benefited his students. He uses his culture to show its richness through the study of literature. ,When he was awarded the Nobel Prize, he represented his country in traditional dress, defending Nelson Mandela, who was imprisoned at the time, and asserting his political aspirations and intellectual convictions.   Soyinka Wole at the Hôtel Le Littré The author travels the world to give interviews and lectures. The Hôtel Le Littré has played host to media figures including film-makers, writers and actors. The writer stayed at our establishment to give an interview for the magazine La Croix Hebdo on the occasion of the release of his latest novel in August 2023, which will be published shortly. Indeed, his long-awaited latest novel, Les chroniques du pays des gens les plus heureux du monde, was published in 2023, after a hiatus of half a century. He denounces the corruption of the elites through two friends who face a journey fraught with pitfalls. Doctor Menka faces the harsh reality of organ trafficking, while his oldest friend, Durole Payne, is destined for a prestigious position at the United Nations. But his enemies seem determined to stop him. This novel marks the author’s return to the international stage and establishes him as a political activist.  His works have always been the marker of his political ideas, in which he denounces colonialism, corruption and the trampling of individual and collective freedoms. He also recounts his own experiences through his autobiography, Aké the years of childhood, a best-selling book that is now studied in preparatory classes. He uses all literary styles to communicate the complexity of his thinking, publishing essays as well as poems rich in the history and culture of his people.   Soyinka Wole is “The writer who stages a dramatic representation of existence in a vast cultural perspective enriched by poetic resonances”.

Brazil at the Littré

Le Littré’s new Brazilian “ambassadors”, Adriana Reis and Paulo Panayotis, joined us in Paris for a tourist escapade before flying to London. These journalists, who came to meet the director of the Littré hotel, are the founders of the Brazilian journalistic tourism portal O que Vi Pelo Mundo, which means “what I have seen around the world”. Adriana Reis, journalist, editor and co-creator of the portal, studied in Bordeaux in 1994. She previously worked as an international correspondent for TV Record and as a reporter, producer, editor and international coordinator. Paulo Panayotis, of Greek origin, was born in Brazil and is the founder of Oquevipelomundo. As a journalist, reporter and international coordinator, he uses his experience to offer an educated Brazilian public eager to travel, advice and journalistic content on different hotels, restaurants, museums and more generally the cultural aspect of a country. In search of valuable tips, good addresses and recommendations, Adriana and Paulo were very frequently solicited by travel enthusiasts. They decided to put their precious addresses gathered from all over the world at the disposal of the Brazilian population with high purchasing power. Their passion for travel and their previous enriching professional experiences led them to develop a profession. What Brazilians like about the Parisian Hotel Le Littré Large, spacious and bright rooms are synonymous with comfort for Brazilians. Culturally, they have a disposition to dress up for any occasion, which is why they arrive in Paris with bulky luggage. The rooms equipped with a dressing room at the Littré hotel are perfect for this type of clientele. The location, between Saint Germain des Prés and Montparnasse, is ideal. The Left Bank is indeed the favorite bank of the Brazilians. Often little spoken by Brazilians, English is not a mandatory language in Brazil. To learn a second or even a third language, you must have a scholarship, reserved only for the most gifted, which will give them access to the French and British alliances. Thus, a concierge service with the ability to speak Portuguese is extremely valuable. At the Hotel Le Littré, Brazilian tourists are the heart of our international clientele, with whom we have built relationships. Our multilingual concierge service is attentive to their needs. Interacting with our concierges is essential; Brazilians appreciate and value proximity. The interview of Brazilian journalists in the heart of a Parisian hotel After an interview about the history of the hotel, its return to the forefront after the COVID-19 crisis, and the changes to be faced in the hotel sector, it’s the globetrotter journalists’ turn to answer our questions. How would you define Brazilians and what can you tell us about Brazil? In Brazil, there are major differences within the country in terms of climate, culture and ethnicity. In summer, the North of Brazil can reach almost 35° while the South is close to 0°. From an ethnic point of view, Brazilians living in the North are indigenous while those in the South, close to Argentina and Uruguay, are Italians, Europeans in general. We are witnessing a cosmopolitan Brazilian population. The Brazilian Eldorado is undoubtedly Paris, the city of love and romance, which never ceases to make many tourists dream every year, who even book their stay on credit to admire the sublime Iron Lady from the rooms of the Hotel Littré. Indeed, the majority of Brazilians have a low standard of living, not allowing them to travel, so travel is considered a luxury. Very warm, it is a people who like to welcome others and to make discover its culture and the tourist places. Physical contact is omnipresent, gestures of affection are the custom when meeting people. There is a strong closeness, which spreads easily. What do you appreciate in Paris? The Littré hotel of course and its excellent quality-price ratio. We particularly appreciated the variety of the breakfast! We appreciate everything. Paris is a beautiful city, always on the move, with lots of new things to discover. For us, all flights are to Paris.Tell us a professional anecdote? When we were correspondents in London, we went on vacation to Greece, to Santorini. That’s where we heard about Lady Diana’s death on TV. We gathered our things and left as quickly as possible to cover this dramatic event. We had the opportunity to access privileged places and meet privileged people, such as the Queen of England, Princess Diana, President Nelson Mandela. We know respectively 40 and 70 countries around the world. What do you like best about your job?“Freedom,” Paulo tells us. “It’s the ability to do what I want every day, to explore and meet people. For me, eye-to-eye contact is and remains irreplaceable. As a journalist, it is very important to meet people face to face in order to form an opinion, and analyze their verbal and non-verbal communication. It allows us to see who we can trust”. “We are constantly on a quest for knowledge, a journalist never stops learning. I enjoy the diversity of places, stories and encounters. What I want to know about Le Littré is what lies behind its walls. If the walls have ears then I listen carefully to the stories the institution holds.”What does travel bring to you on a personal level? There is a phrase that says that “Traveling is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer”. Our friends in Brazil who do not travel tell us that we are very rich culturally. Indeed, our job allows us to have access to a great diversity of cultures, people, we learn a lot from others, we evolve. “If you want to be happy, travel with two bags: one to give and one to receive.” GoetheWhat are your upcoming projects?Starting tomorrow, we continue our tourist program in London, before returning to Paris to go back to Brazil. Being at home is also good after a long trip. We will resume our project in Burgundy which was started before the Covid, which could not be realized. We would like to set up a project with the Littré for the period of the Olympic Games. Today, the hotel industry is more than ever confronted with economic issues. The challenge for Le Littré, for other hotels in the capital and in the world, is to keep the human aspect at the heart of its concerns. Indeed, “What makes the difference between two 5-star hotels is not the quality of the infrastructure in the rooms and common areas, but the people behind the infrastructure. It’s the human element that makes this customer service so personalized and warm, just like the Brazilian culture.” Paulo Panayotis.

Attentive listening is brought to you at the hotel bar Le Littré, a quality service and a mastered mixology. Our barman David, as a real passionate, presents you his colored, sweet or fruity works of art. From the blue lagoon to the cosmopolitan through the caipirinha, a colorful show is offered to you at the calm and relaxing hotel bar of the Littré Paris. And if you order the barman’s favorite cocktail, he will serve you a cosmopolitan! To make it, David reveals his recipe. For this cocktail, you will need :Half a limeIce cubesVodka (5 cl)Cointreau (2.5 cl)Cranberry juiceAn orange wedge for decorationTo make this cocktail, squeeze the juice from the lime. Then, with your shaker, pour the ice cubes first, then the vodka, the cointreau, the cranberry juice, the lemon juice and the lemon. Stir well and pour into a cocktail glass. For decoration, add an orange wedge. Your cosmopolitan is ready to be enjoyed! What is your secret for a successful cosmopolitan? My secret for the cosmopolitan is to put the lemon that I have squeezed beforehand in the shaker and to shake it. For a cocktail that I have never made before, for example, you should always taste it before serving it to the customer. A bartender has to be honest, if the cocktail is not good, you have to recognize it and not serve it to the customer.A bartender is like a chef, he makes sure that what he proposes is good before serving it to the customerDavid’s interview, at the bar of the Littré hotelDavid, our bartender, gives you his advice on the bartending profession. A former social worker who lived in Canada before moving to Paris, he has turned to a profession of action and passion. His desire to learn allowed him to add to his bow the realization of cocktails and drinks of all kinds. His desire to create human contact during your tasting is a real exchange and sharing of ideas.Q1 : What do you prefer in your job?The human contact, the exchanges with the customers.Q2 : What are the qualities needed to become a good bartender? For me, the qualities necessary to be a good bartender are relational qualities, essential to create human contact, sensitivity, a sense of humor, creativity, honesty and a good presentation.Sensitivity is important in order to understand the customer’s needs, you have to be sensitive to his tastes in order to offer him the most suitable choice if he is undecided.Sometimes, a customer orders a cocktail that I don’t know, I ask him the ingredients, if he remembers the taste of this cocktail, if it is rather sweet, fruity or bitter. I have to use my imagination and be creative in order to recreate the cocktail he tasted. The customer even tells me that my cocktail is even better than the one he tasted before!Relational qualities are essential in this job. Friendliness, a smile and a sense of humor are essential. It is a relationship of exchange with the client: I use my personal experience to create a link with my life experience in Paris. I use the interpersonal skills I acquired during my former job in the social sector to listen and give the best advice.People say that a bartender should not talk about sensitive subjects such as politics or religion, but I think this is wrong. A bartender can talk about anything if he knows how to do it! You just have to find a balance, listen without judging each other’s opinions and engage in a constructive discussion. Finally, a bartender must have a perfect presentation, especially when working in a 4 star hotel.Q3 : What advice would you give to a young person starting out in the profession?I think that age doesn’t matter when you are starting out, it’s the passion for the job that counts and the relational skills. You have to like having contact with customers.I would give them the advice to challenge themselves and evolve. There are different types of establishments where you can work, you can go from a small neighborhood bar to a starred hotel bar. You can evolve in the profession and become a head bartender, manage your own team, which makes your skills evolve. Then you can take on the challenge of moving on to more and more prestigious hotels. Young people are lucky to have the energy, it’s a physical job all the same.

What are the criterias for rating a 4-star hotel?

  • 17/01/2023
  • About the hotel

Since the French hotel industry is made up of a majority of 3-star hotels, and therefore of upper mid-range accommodations, the transition to a 4-star hotel represents an advantage in the hotel market, which is facing tough competition. Le Littré: a 4-star hotel in Paris Perfectly located, the hotel Le Littré Paris has recently had its 4-star certification renewed in March 2022. To ensure that tourists who come to enjoy a Parisian getaway for a weekend or for a long vacation, businessmen or regular customers enjoy maximum comfort, hotels are inspected by professionals in the sector. The hotel establishment applies to an auditing firm of its choice, among those accredited by the French Accreditation Committee (COFRAC), which carries out the inspection. This voluntary classification is done at the request of the hotelier: a real guarantee of quality and reliability for its customers. Following the inspector’s visit, including a mystery visit for 4-star hotels, a grade is given according to a grid of criteria. This classification awards the number of stars and remains valid for a period of 5 years. Between Montparnasse and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a few meters from the Jardin du Luxembourg and the capital’s must-see tourist attractions, the Hotel Le Littré welcomes its guests with the comfort and facilities of a 4-star hotel in Paris. Indeed, the awarding of the certification of a 4 star hotel is based on 3 main criteria: -The quality and comfort of the equipment -The quality of the services offered -The good practices in terms of environment and reception of disabled people. The comfort and facilities in the rooms of our 4-star hotel Spacious rooms of more than 16 m² including access to international television channels, WI-FI access, a minibar, a safe, a functional air conditioning system and a kettle are the facilities available to you at the 4-star hotel Le Littré Paris. In the bathroom, you will find a hairdryer and toiletries to offer you moments of relaxation. Take a bath or a shower, as you wish. In order to meet Atout France criteria, but above all out of concern for the well-being and safety of its clients and employees, the Littré hotel has integrated devices and equipment adapted to people with disabilities. Indeed, in three of our superior rooms for disabled people, you have access to the bathroom in a wheelchair, a chair for the shower, as well as switches positioned at the appropriate height. These 3 rooms are approved for all types of disabilities.   High quality services offered by a 4 star hotel in Paris Our breakfast, which can be served in your room, is perfect to start the day on the right foot while admiring a view of the Eiffel Tower from our superior, executive or terrace suite. To book it, our online reservation system gives you the opportunity to benefit from the most advantageous offers. A service worthy of a 4 star hotel in Paris. A dedicated multilingual staff is at your disposal to give you the best advice and recommendations on the area around our 4 star hotel in the 6th arrondissement for the duration of your stay in Paris. A 4 star hotel in Paris and a 4 star hotel in the world: what are the differences? Although there are basic criteria common to all countries: room facilities, bathroom facilities, hotel services and catering, the level of service and comfort varies. To date, there is no international classification due to the economic, cultural and regulatory differences of each country. Standards and rules sometimes vary within these countries: Italy and Spain, for example, have a mandatory classification by region. If you are used to staying in Asia, the level of comfort and service of a 4-star hotel is much higher than the French average. A 5 star hotel in Asia corresponds to the quality of service of a 4 star hotel in Paris. On the other hand, the European average is disparate. Balkan countries such as Croatia and Montenegro offer a lower quality of service and comfort for a similar category and level of standing. In Egypt and Turkey, where there is no strict certification, hotels award themselves their number of stars. On the contrary, in Germany the star rating is controlled by a very strict organization, which makes a 4 star hotel very reliable and of high quality. It is therefore important to compare the services and relaxation areas offered by the hotelier beforehand in order to choose the most suitable accommodation for your needs and desired standard. Reading the comments and reviews of guests who have stayed at a 4-star hotel is an excellent way to get an idea of the level of service offered.   Come and stay at the Littré hotel in a warm and family atmosphere where our staff will listen to your needs !

The Littré hotel, a Montparnasse train station hotel located in a historic district of Paris

  • 13/01/2023
  • About the hotel

The hotel le Littré, located a few meters from the Montparnasse train station, is the starting point for your Parisian escapades. Between the Montparnasse and Saint-Germain-des-Prés districts, it is the ideal place to spend a comfortable night and enjoy a delicious breakfast before setting off to discover the capital or start your seminar. Discover the Gare Montparnasse area, the home of the Hotel Littré, a typically Parisian neighborhood full of stories and anecdotes where the passage of intellectuals has deeply marked the history of literature and the city.   A little history on the Montparnasse district or the “Mont Parnasse” In fact, young Parisian artists from the Paris Montparnasse train station area meeting at the foot of a hill to recite their poems in the 1920s are actually the origin of the name Montparnasse. The name refers to a Greek mountain over 2000 meters high, overlooking the city of Delphi, a symbol of Greek mythology. The city was a real place of worship of the god Apollo and the nine muses during Antiquity. The notion of height is thus the key word of the district with the famous Montparnasse Tower.    A hotel between the Montparnasse train station and Saint Germain des Prés : a place of cosmopolitan meetings  In the 1920s, the Montparnasse station district became the “center of the world”. Between bars, traditional brasseries, bookshops, intellectuals mingle. The bistros became a place of exchange, debate and disagreement that could end at dusk. The artists are an integral part of the decor of the Montparnasse district, and their works become their currency. Victor Libion, manager of La Rotonde, one of the most popular brasseries in the neighborhood, let artists sleep on the benches and gave them bread in exchange for their works. Poets, novelists, painters, and politicians gave the Montparnasse station district the reputation of a place of artistic effervescence. Apollinaire wrote: “In Montparnasse, on the contrary, we now find the real artists dressed in American style”. Today, tourists from all over the world come to see the remnants of the artistic Montparnasse. And Le Littré, a hotel just a stone’s throw from the Montparnasse train station, welcomes them with great pleasure. We are particularly pleased to welcome each year many Brazilians who appreciate our central hotel. Our hotel close to the Montparnasse station, a hotel in the center of culture  Close to the Montparnasse train station, the Littré Paris hotel is surrounded by cinemas, theaters and bistros to discover the charm of Parisian evenings. The cultural offer around the Montparnasse train station is rich thanks to its museums, monuments and places to walk: Paris Montparnasse – Top of the City, the Montparnasse cemetery, the Bourdelle museum, the Catacombs or the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art.  Today, the bistros near the Montparnasse station hotel – La Rotonde, Le Select, La Coupole, and La Closerie des Lilas – are remnants of the artistic tumult of the 1920s and of traditional French culture and gastronomy.  “Whichever café in Montparnasse you ask a driver from the right bank to take you to, he will take you to La Rotonde,” wrote Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Rises in 1926. As for the Closerie des Lilas brasserie, it was frequented by Hemingway, Miller, and Fitzgerald who had the manuscript of Gatsby the Magnificent read. The cinema in the heart of the neighborhood around our Montparnasse station hotel  The heart of the neighborhood became a source of inspiration for writers, novelists, poets, painters, but also directors. Montparnasse 19, also known as Les Amants de Montparnasse: a film produced by Franco London Film tells the story of life in the neighborhood around the Montparnasse station in the years 1919-1920, in the aftermath of the war through the tumultuous life of Modigliani. The love and passion for painting, alcohol, his meeting with his girlfriend Jeanne are staged in an artistic Montparnasse that reveals the talent of the famous Italian. Rebellious and of a protesting spirit, he refuses to barter his art for money. This will lead inexorably to his tragic end. It is today one of the cult films that list the artists of the XXth century parnassian.    A little trip down memory lane: the construction of the Montparnasse station Built in an art deco style by the French architect and designer Henri Pacon, the Montparnasse train station has become the 4th largest train station in France, welcoming more than 53 million travelers. It is the arrival point for many businessmen and women who come to attend or organize the trade shows and exhibitions at the Porte de Versailles. The main lines are at the terminus of the Montparnasse train station, five minutes from the Littré hotel.  The Montparnasse train station is the hub of French and international tourist destinations and is a monument to technical and artistic progress. The station was notably presented during the Universal Exhibition, a historic event that aims to present the greatest innovations of the country that welcomes visitors from around the world. The construction of the Montparnasse station has evolved over the centuries. In the 1800s, two lines were built, one of which served the terminus: Gare Saint Lazare, the station that inspired Monet for his impressionist paintings. The second line served the former barrier of Maine, called Versailles Rive Gauche. It later experienced technical and financial difficulties, forcing its reconstruction between the barrière du Maine and the boulevard Montparnasse.  In 1902, the Invalides station was built in order to unload the Montparnasse station, with the station itself as the terminus. This station provided long-distance traffic until 1935. The Montparnasse station saw thousands of travelers pass through. Moreover, the traffic coming from the suburbs exploded, so new tracks were opened in order to accommodate the maximum number of people and have a maximum flow of passengers in better conditions.

It was the major event to showcase the industrial progress of the host country. A call for projects was issued, and Gustave Eiffel’s project was selected: a 300-meter high tower named after him.At first strongly criticized by the artistic community, an open letter against its construction was written, published in the newspaper Le Temps and signed by intellectuals such as Guy de Maupassant and Charles Garnier. As soon as it was opened to the general public on the day of the exhibition, the Eiffel Tower was adored. The question of its conservation became obvious and so this monument, visible from the terraces of our Eiffel Tower hotel, became the must-see monument that adorns Paris.Today, the Iron Lady is the cultural symbol of the city. Areas frequented by the public are obviously cleaned and disinfected several times a day. We also take special care in the areas reserved for members of the Staff.
